The proposed topic for this research project was ‘teachers’ perceptions of barriers to social participation for individuals with autism’. Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, data was unable to be collected for this research project, and therefore, tasks discussed within this project will instead reflect upon the potential this research had to improve and reform practice for teachers and how autism is interpreted as a social concept. The purpose of this project is to critically consider how individuals with autism are perceived to face difficulties towards social participation, and how the pedagogy of teachers and professionals can influence the opportunities and attitude towards social participation. These tasks have supported myself in considering social participation to a greater level than just my local surroundings, autism is complex, and this independent project acts as an opportunity to understand barriers to social participation and how it can greatly differ for every individual with autism.
